Interprofessional Large Scale Disaster Response; a Virtual Learning Event

Topic: Leading & Advancing Improvements in Health, Health Care, & Higher Education

Background/Introduction: California Baptist University’s (CBU) health profession programs recognize the international call for integration of interprofessional education competencies to prepare students for collaborative practice. One proposed approach to improving health professionals’ abilities to work effectively in teams is to integrate the required Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competencies (IPEC) within graduate healthcare related programs..The CBU University wide IPE disaster focused simulation includes over 500 participants multiple healthcare disciplines across the university and from the local community since 2017.

Purpose: In 2020, the unpresented global pandemic required flipping the previous face to face activity and transition to a virtual unfolding, problem-based learning activity. Using the Zoom platforms small groups, digital story telling as well as pre-brief and debrief activities we successfully met the objectives previously set for in person simulation.

Methods or Processes/Procedures: IPE students complete the pre- post Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) that also included qualitative evaluation of the learning experience. An analysis of themes and yearly comparisons including both virtual and face to face helped identify the most valuable outcomes and future implications.

Results: No obvious impact of not completing IPE 530 Event face to face due to COVID-19 pandemic for 2 years.

Limitations: An important advantage of a live event with a dedicated event space is that once people are in that space, they’re focused on the event. There are no other stimuli pulling their focus away. On the other hand, if people are attending a virtual event from home, they might have other things competing for their attention.

Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Due to the measured successful outcome of the IPE Disaster Response ; a Virtual Learning Event the IPE faculty committee unanimously approved using the strengths of the virtual event and using feedback for the development of Spring 2023 hybrid learning experience.
