Niganawenimaanaanig: Mentoring & Sustainability

Biography

Dr. Misty Wilkie, enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa (ND), was the 16th American Indian to earn a PhD in the U.S. She influences Indigenous health care, equity, and policy and improves cultural humility and awareness while promoting increased diversity of the nursing workforce. Her vision led to the federal funding that established Niganawenimaanaanig (Ojibwemowin for ‘we take care of them’) at Bemidji State University (MN) in 2017. She advocates for minority nursing students and is a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion in health care to bring healthier outcomes to Indigenous patients, families, and communities.
