Leadership Matters: Advancing Inclusive Excellence in a College of Nursing

Abstract
This is a challenging time that includes the COVID-19 pandemic that disproportionately negatively affects people of color and increasing racial tension as a result of ongoing police use of excessive force against Black people. Despite these and other challenges, the University of South Carolina (UofSC) College of Nursing continues to prioritize the integration of diversity, equity, and inclusivity into our community (including students, faculty, and staff) to achieve inclusive excellence. National recommendations from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and National League for Nursing will frame the discussion on the why, what, and how these journeys should occur. We will describe key strategies and practices that have been implemented at the UofSC College of Nursing over the past three years, along with challenges and lessons learned. Importantly, we describe the critical role of leadership in facing the unprecedented current challenges and share strategies we have implemented. Although we will share multiple strategies, an essential part of our effort is listening to our stakeholders- especially those most affected and letting them co-author solutions. Lastly, we will discuss the next steps while also highlighting the future goals and aspirations of our team.

Biography
Dr. Jeannette Andrews is the Dean of the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. Dr. Andrews has achieved success as a National Institutes of Health-funded investigator for multiple community trials targeting cardiovascular risk reduction and tobacco control. She has authored over 200 publications and abstracts, has served as an international and national consultant along with contributing to multiple task groups related to health and nursing. Dr. Andrews is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellow, and an AACN-Wharton Executive Fellow.
