Understanding Inclusive Excellence

Presenter: Dr. Damon A Williams
Description: This presentation is designed to demonstrate to nursing schools that the integration of their diversity and quality efforts leads to inclusive excellence and this work should be positioned at the core of institutional functioning. This discussion will focus on the educational benefits available to students and to the institution when this integration is done well and is sustained over time. This session offers recommendations for infusing diversity and inclusivity into recruiting, admissions, and hiring; into the curriculum and co-curriculum; and into administrative structures and practices. Present evidence suggests that this approach, in preparing the future nursing workforce, strengthens the academy and communities of persons served.

The Lived Experience Panel

Description: This panel will review the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in nursing programs. This will include discussions of men in nursing, applying ADA accommodation requirements to nursing students, and the intersectionality of gender identity. The panel will discuss the unique challenges for each group and how best to address these challenges in nursing academics.

Description: This presentation accompanies the awarding of the 2019 Lectureship Award for Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability in Nursing Education. This presentation will focus on advancing an inclusive, diverse culture within colleges of nursing, and influencing diverse nursing and healthcare practice domains and the lay community through education as outlined in the award submission.

Description: The key purpose of this roundtable discussion is to create a space for discussions based on the symposium presentations. Participants are asked to bring questions with open-mindedness and grace. “How” and “Why” are great beginnings to questions that allow for discussions on a range of diversity topics.
